Merrimack Village District, NH (Reducing Sodium Chloride Loading)

The Project

The use of salt for deicing of roads has led to rising sodium and chloride levels in the local sand and gravel aquifers that serve as the sole source of drinking water for the Town of Merrimack. This prompted the Merrimack Village District (MVD) to apply for a Source Water Protection Grant from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES). The NHDES awarded the Grant in May 2011.

Status/Results:

EGGI inventoried the sources of sodium and chloride in each of the three wellhead protection areas and developed a salt loading model. GIS-generated maps illustrate locations of where salt is entering into each WHPA and show EGGI’s estimated volume of sodium and chloride entering the groundwater systems. EGGI drafted a sodium chloride mitigation plan and submitted copies to many stakeholders for review and comments prior to submitting the final plan to the NHDES. The intended results of the investigation is to develop a Mitigation Plan that will serve to reduce the total bulk amount of sodium and chloride that is being applied within each of the wellhead protection areas that provide recharge to the MVD Public Supply Production Wells.
