EGGI Solves 150 Year Old Water Supply Problem for Virginia Community
The Town of Hillsboro, Virginia, contracted EGGI to perform a groundwater exploration and development investigation that focused on identifying a new source of potable water.
The Town has been dependent upon an old spring located on the top of Short Hill Mountain for the past 150 years but as with some springs of this vintage, the water quality and quantity has deteriorated forcing the Town to develop another source of potable water.
In previous years, the Town has tried drilling wells on Short Hill Mountain in attempt to replace the nearby spring but wells were low yielding and did not meet the water needs of the Town. Through a State grant, EGGI conducted a comprehensive groundwater exploration program and selected several exploratory test well sites that represent the best opportunity to intercept water-bearing fractures within or proximal to the Town of Hillsboro.
EGGI’s first test well was recently drilled on a parcel of land where the property owner was fully cooperative and supportive of the efforts of the Town. The well was drilled to 500 feet and the yield measured at the end of drilling was 33 gpm. The test well was converted into a Production Well and a 48-hour pumping test was conducted. The results of the pump test program has determined that this Production Well is capable of producing 36,000 gpd or 25 gpm of excellent quality water, which significantly exceeds the current water supply demand of this community.
The Town of Hillsboro is extremely excited with these results and is moving forward towards acquiring additional funding to develop a back-up supply well and hook up the new Production Well into the existing public water supply system.
