Culpeper Community Sports Complex (Culpeper County, VA)

The Project

EGGI has conducted a phased hydrogeologic investigation covering a study area that circumvents, in part, the Town of Culpeper and includes the Culpeper Community Complex. Interest in developing water supplies at the Complex prompted additional focused investigations to be completed at this project site. To date, EGGI has conducted the following phases of a groundwater resource exploration and development program:

Status/Results:

  • Phase I of the groundwater exploration program identified five sub-areas (Groundwater Development Zones) considered hydrogeologically favorable for groundwater development within the entire regional study area (“Groundwater Exploration and Development – Results of Phase I Investigation – Proposed Culpeper County Water Service Area – Culpeper, Virginia,” Emery & Garrett Groundwater, Inc., 1998).
  • Phase II utilized geophysical surveys to identify specific geologic targets for exploratory test well drilling in two of the five Groundwater Development Zones (“Phase II Geophysical Investigations in Groundwater Development Zones CWW-1 and CWW-3,” Emery & Garrett Groundwater, Inc., March 2001).
  • Phase III included the drilling of an exploratory test well in Groundwater Development Zone CWW-3, which encompasses the Culpeper Community Complex. The test well is referred to as CWW-3a and yielded 300 gpm.
  • During Phase IV, test well CWW-3a was converted to a larger diameter (8-inch-diameter) Production Well.
  • Phase V included the long-term pumping and water quality tests on Production Well CWW-3a.

The results of this study indicate that Production Well CWW-3a is capable of being pumped at a rate of 300 gpm or 432,000 gpd. However, due to the presence of local land uses that pose a potential threat to groundwater quality, this well will be pumped in accordance to a groundwater management plan and schedule.
