Norridgewock, ME (Town Landfill Site)

The Project

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection realized in the 1990s that old town dumps, closed in the 1970s, still had the potential to contaminate groundwater. They initiated a program with a prioritized list to investigate and close such dump sites. EGGI was chosen, on the basis of a Statement of Qualifications, as the prime hydrogeological consultant, and asked to investigate the old dump site in Norridgewock. The dump was at the top of DEP’s list because it is located over a sand and gravel aquifer within a few hundred feet of the Water District’s Public Water Supply Well. EGGI installed monitoring wells strategically around the landfill, assessed the direction of groundwater flow, sampled the wells for landfill water quality parameters, and compared results with water quality sampled at the Town Well. The results were favorable, in that groundwater flowed from the landfill to the river, and not to the Town Well, even when it was pumping. Water quality in all monitoring wells downgradient of the landfill showed no signs of contamination by landfill leachate.

Status/Results:

The DEP closed out the site because of the physical dangers on the face of the former dump site, not because of the water quality threat it was once thought to have posed to the Town’s Well. Data from this study and others have been used in the presentation of a paper entitled “The Natural End of Landfill Leachate” at regional groundwater and drinking water symposia and conferences.

"Dear Peter,

Just a quick note to thank you, and your firm for the professional yet personally attentive manner in which you conducted our business.  Your upbeat approach to our problem was a very refreshing change to the negative mind set we had acquired.

Your unique angle on gravel pit closure has potentially saved us many times your fee.  Thanks again for all you have done."
