City of Concord, NH (Aquifer Protection Ordinance Design)

The Project

The City of Concord Public Works is seeking to develop additional potable water supplies to meet future water supply demands. As a result, the City undertook a master water supply study designed to investigate the potential for developing additional groundwater and surface water resources. EGGI was contracted to investigate the overall potential to develop groundwater resources within the City.  In conjunction with this water supply study, the City has also hired EGGI to proceed with designing and writing an Aquifer Protection Ordinance that can be implemented to preserve the City’s existing and potential water resources for the future.

Status/Results:

EGGI completed a City-wide groundwater investigation and has identified several highly favorable areas within the City for groundwater development.  In addition, a draft Aquifer Protection Ordinance has been written and submitted to the City for approval. This Ordinance uses a novel tiered approach to groundwater protection in order to help protect and preserve water resources utilized by different water systems (e.g., community and non-community water systems) and domestic wells. EGGI is currently helping the City to finalize the ordinance and to implement its specific recommendations (e.g., groundwater reclassification).
