Loudoun County, VA (Solid Waste Landfill Investigations)
After a comprehensive qualifications review of over 15 firms, the Loudoun County Department of Environmental Resources contracted EGGI to conduct a groundwater investigation at the County’s solid waste landfill. Early phases of this landfill were constructed without liners, and thus posed a specific threat to local groundwater resources, particularly since the landfill is underlain by highly weathered and fractured limestone conglomerate. EGGI installed a variety of wells in this complex geologic setting including groundwater monitoring wells around the landfill, caisson wells through the waste mass, gas monitoring wells, and landfill gas extraction wells. The hydrogeology of the site was fully characterized including the determination of groundwater flow, potentiometric surface maps, groundwater quality maps, identification of deeply weathered zones, etc. EGGI was a pioneer in the assessment of landfill gas emanations from this landfill, its potential impact on neighboring residential developments, and generation of groundwater contamination from landfill gas. EGGI participated in the preparation of the site’s Remedial Action Plan (RAP).
EGGI has been repeatedly and consistently selected by the County over the past 20+ years to be their hydrogeologic consulting firm to successfully perform these difficult tasks at the landfill. Recently (2013), EGGI was awarded another 3-year contract to continue to perform these services. EGGI has completed all required work ahead of schedule and has met all client expectations and specifications. As a result, EGGI has become Loudoun County’s hydrogeological consultant of choice and has been awarded numerous other projects as a result of their consistent professional service.
