Town of Rockport, ME (Mid-Coast Solid Waste Landfill)
During the late 1800s, a deep quarry was excavated in limestone in Rockport, Maine. It filled with water following abandonment. During the mid 1900s, the Town started filling the quarry with municipal solid waste. In 1993 the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) drafted a consent agreement that called for a hydrogeological assessment of the quarry landfill. EGGI was engaged as hydrogeologic consultant on all aspects related to groundwater and leachate management of the quarry. EGGI’s contributions have included the location and installation of a set of monitoring wells, routine water quality monitoring, water budget analysis, recommendations for reducing the pumping of leachate to wastewater, and installation of a leachate collection well in the waste mass.
EGGI continues to consult on all aspects of water quality and water management at the quarry landfill. We are working on innovative solutions to this inherited situation, including reducing the infiltration of stormwater from surrounding lands, improving water quality in a connected quarry so that it can be pumped off as stormwater, and spray irrigation of leachate, etc.
