Piedmont Geriatric Hospital (Nottoway County, VA)
The Piedmont Geriatric Hospital, located in Nottoway County, Virginia, obtained water from several on-site public water supply wells until chlorinated solvent contamination forced the closure of several wells. The hospital resorted to purchasing water from a nearby municipality. A new correctional facility (Virginia Center for Behavioral Health) was being built adjacent to the hospital, resulting in an increased demand for water. With the third party water supplier having difficulty meeting current demand for water during recent droughts, Piedmont Geriatric Hospital began once again to explore for additional sources of water.
EGGI conducted a multi-phased groundwater development program to locate wells that would yield sufficient quantities of water without impacting the contaminant plume within the groundwater. Using remote sensing analyses, geologic mapping, and geophysical surveying, several exploratory test wells were drilled. Four test wells were converted to production wells and tested simultaneously along with one existing production well for yield and quality during a 48-hour-plus pumping test. The combined average recommended yield of the production wells is sufficient to meet all of the water supply requirements of the two facilities.
