Town of Fryeburg, ME (Groundwater Protection)

The Project

The Fryeburg Planning Board first contracted EGGI to review an application for a groundwater withdrawal permit for commercial spring water to be pumped from a series of wells. EGGI’s initial finding was that the proposed groundwater withdrawal, in combination with others, had the potential to dry up the spring-fed brook that drained the aquifer. EGGI proposed to develop a groundwater flow model for the Town of Fryeburg to use for properly evaluating all similar past applications. Data from a variety of sources (USGS, Water Utility, and private consultants) were used to build and calibrate the model. The model is now being used to manage the groundwater withdrawals that spring water purveyors can remove from this aquifer in order to protect the flow of water in the brook. An innovative method of illustrating sustainable yield was developed using an analogy with a bank account, such as: income (precipitation recharge to groundwater) and expenditures (groundwater withdrawals from wells). This analogy allowed technical concepts to be understood by the general public and was successful in gaining support from the local community.

Status/Results:

The Town of Fryeburg and its Aquifer Research Committee have been extremely pleased with both EGGI’s published materials and public presentations.  Additional uses of the model, including wellhead protection delineation, have been applied at this site.  Work is ongoing towards the routine measurement of flow in the brook. Such measurements will serve to provide a long-term protection method that will limit the potential for over-pumping of the aquifer to occur by local purveyors of spring water.

"Thank you for all the effort and time you have given us so far in our quest to protect and understand our aquifer. Your presentation at the Planning Board meeting was excellent. We look forward to working with you on the completion of this project.”
